The heart of the neighborhood is the 80-acre Cheesman Park; opened in 1907, it was renamed in honor of Walter S. Cheesman, a Denver pioneer and water baron. Full of lush green grass, winding paths amid majestic trees, a small playground and an iconic pavilion that dates back to 1910; the park is an oasis in the middle of the city.
It is also a park with a ghoulish past – the land was originally a cemetery in the late 1800s, when the residential boundaries of Denver didn’t stretch that far to the east. But after years of disuse and a petition to Congress, graves were moved and a beautiful park was designed for the nearby residents to enjoy.
Today’s residents of the Cheeman Park neighborhood enjoy its macabre history. They also enjoy year-round events at the Denver Botanic Gardens, which borders the park. Walk a few blocks north and immerse yourself in the eclectic shops and local flavor along Colfax. Head a few blocks south to enjoy the boutiques and higher-end restaurants in Cherry Creek North. Or jump on the Cherry Creek bike path to head downtown.
