Congress Park, Denver Homes

Homes surrounding Congress Park are as colorful as the park’s history. Congress Park is bounded by Colfax Avenue on the north, 6th Avenue to the south, Harrison Street on the east and York Street on the west.

This area contains the 7th Avenue Historic District, the largest such district in Denver, containing homes built mainly between 1890 and the mid 1930s. Mission, Mediterranian Revival, Italianate, Dutch Colonial and Victorian homes can be found here. Elsewhere, the “Denver Square” and bungalow are common home styles. Early Art Deco buildings and high rises dating to the 60s make home options in this neighborhood more flexible.

Congress Park offers easy access to downtown Denver, the I-25 and I-70. There are several small neighborhood shopping centers and the Cherry Creek Shopping District is nearby. There is an eclectic mix of dining opportunities - Greek, Japanese, Chinese, French, Italian, Vietnamese and American – particularly along East Colfax Avenue.

Congress Park: The Park

Established in the early 1900s, Congress Park has a colorful past, the park being once the city’s graveyard. The cemetery, having fallen into disuse and disrepair and having many a scandalous tale involving the ne’er-do-wells that inhabited it, was one of the “eyesores” of Denver. The city lobbied Congress to change the land use to a park and in gratitude, the city named the park “Congress Park”. (It should be noted, however, that the site of the 17-acre park we know today as “Congress Park” was never used for burials.)

Congress Park today offers a number of recreational opportunities, including tennis courts, sports fields, a playground, picnic pavilion and an outdoor swimming pool. The Denver Botanic Gardens adjoin it.
